MINER - It is indeed a special occasion when the community can come together and celebrate the service and wonderful life of one of its members. An upcoming event would certainly qualify as one of those occasions.
At 3 p.m. July 9 at the Miner Convention Center, the West End Community Betterment Association is sponsoring an award banquet for a leader of the Sikeston community, Bishop Charlie Green Jr. He will be this year's recipient of the WECBA Community Leader Award.
The WECBA gives this award to someone it feels has made a considerable difference in the community. Green is a member of the Minister's Alliance Group, as well as the CEO of the Community Economic Development Corporation in Sikeston. He also, in association with his church staff, provides a free meal the fourth Wednesday of each month from 4-6 p.m. to anyone who needs one.
To honor Green, WECBA President Harry Howard said that "there will be musical tributes and four special speakers" at the event. The speakers will emphasize Green's service in four areas: family, church, community, and friendship. After dinner, the city of Sikeston and the WECBA will make special presentations honoring Bishop Green.
