COLUMBIA -- Sikeston senior Blake Angle remains alive for a medal at the Class 3 state wrestling tournament in Columbia.
Angle, wrestling in the 120-pound division, won an exciting quarterfinal match 3-2 over Jonathan Melton of Staley, using a takedown late in the third period to earn the victory.
Angle then took on Brad Perkins of Oak Park in the semifinals who is undefeated on the season. Perkins jumped ahead 8-3 but Angle fought back. In the end, Perkins was too much, defeating the Sikeston senior 10-8.
Angle wrestled again on Saturday. Results can be found in Tuesday's edition of the Standard Democrat.
Sikeston's Kenton Robinson, wrestling 138, lost his quarterfinal match 6-0 to Grant Leeth of Kearney. Robinson rebounded with a pin of Caleb Shuck of Willard at 2:00 in the second wrestleback on Friday afternoon.
Robinson's season then ended with an impressive record of 47-5, when he was beaten 4-3 by James Culp of Warrensburg in the third round of wrestlebacks.
Sikeston's Jacob Stinnett, wrestling at 132, was pinned by Cole Hamai of Washington in the second wrestleback, ending his season with a record of 32-16.
Dexter's Cody Stevens, wrestling at 160, was pinned by Makenna Cook of Kirksville at 5:41 in the Class 2 quarterfinals. Stevens rebounded however, defeating Blake Joyner of Moberly 3-2 in a second round wrestleback match.
Stevens stayed alive with a 10-3 win over Braxxtin Todd of Excelsior Springs in the third round wrestleback.
At 126, Dexter's Trevor Waldner saw his season end at 29-10 after being pinned by Wardell Morgan of McCluer South-Berkeley at 1:47 in second round wrestlebacks.
At 132, Dexter's Morgan Dean's season ended with a 27-9 record after being pinned by Jesse Sherman of Bolivar at 2:15.
Wrestling at 182, New Madrid County Central's Austin Cummins saw his season end on Friday after dropping his quarterfinal match to Caleb Roberts of Blair Oaks after being pinned at 1:03. Then Cummins was pinned by Brad Williams of Albany in second round wrestlebacks at 1:52, ending his season at 21-18.
NMCC's Brandon Western, wrestling at 285, received a forfeit in his second round wrestleback before being pinned at 1:32 in third round wrestlebacks by Dylan Morris of Lawson.
