CHARLESTON -- With Charleston's city manager laid to rest, city officials are now taking on the task of finding a suitable replacement.

City Manager Daniel Gruen died Monday at the age of 49.

"This unexpected death of Dan Gruen has really hit us pretty hard here," said Mayor Jackie Whiteside.

"It was quite a shock to all of us," City Clerk Marsha Hart agreed.

Services for Gruen were conducted in the St. Louis area where he was born and raised, according to Whiteside.

"Flags were put out throughout the city (of Charleston) in his honor," Whiteside said.

While Gruen's death is "a setback" for the city, "I don't think our citizens have anything to worry about as far as our day-to-day operations in Charleston," Whiteside said. "The city's in good hands. We have a very, very capable staff here."
