CHARLESTON -- Given the price of fuel, Mississippi County Commissioners are pleased with how bids came in for rock hauling.

During their regular weekly meeting Thursday, Commissioners awarded the bid to haul gravel from area quarries to the low bidder, JSH Trucking of Matthews.

JSH Trucking bid the hauling at $5.60 per ton from quarries in Cape Girardeau to the county highway department, $5.51 from Tamms, Ill., and $5.76 per ton on hauls from Dexter.

Asked if the contract was for a specific amount, Steve Jones, commissioner, explained the hauling is on an "as needed" basis.

"When stock piles start running low, they call it in," Jones said.
