SIKESTON -- Sikeston R-6 School District said goodbye to its longtime board attorney and secretary during the regular Board of Education meeting Tuesday at the board office.

After 21 years as secretary and attorney for the Board of Education, Rice "Pete" Burns Jr. said about a year ago he made his decision to retire because he just felt it was time to do so.

"I've enjoyed every minute of it," Burns said. "I've worked with great teachers, great administrators and great board members."

And the feeling is mutual.

"I think if you can cut Pete open, he bleeds Bulldog red and black through and through," Superintendent Steve Borgsmiller said of Burns. "That's why he has been so good -- because he truly believes in public education and the local education system and the value it provides."

In December 1991, Burns succeeded the late Fielding Potashnick in his role as board attorney and secretary. Prior to Potashnick, Charlie Matthews and David Bailey served in the dual role. Burns pointed out between the four of them, their terms span nearly 75 years.
