Sikeston Public Library now offers wifi access

SIKESTON -- Last month, the Sikeston Public Library began offering wireless Internet access within the library, for users who would prefer to bring their own laptop, tablet or other device.

"This was a service we had wanted to offer for a while, but couldn't accomplish with our existing equipment," said Ron Eifert, assistant director and technology coordinator for the library.

When the library received a technology mini-grant from the Missouri State Library to purchase a new firewall, they decided to purchase a firewall that would also produce a wireless signal. A password is needed to access the service and can be obtained at the circulation desk.

Wireless access is offered only during library hours, and falls under the same filtering and restrictions that the Library's wired computers do. "This protects the library's Internet connectivity through MOREnet, and keeps us eligible for state and federal grants," Eifert said.

In addition to a new firewall, the mini-grant allowed the library to purchase a digital projector, laptop computer and large screen to be used in the McAmis Community Room. "We have noticed that there is a lack of meeting spaces for non-profit groups to use at no charge in Sikeston," Eifert said. "We wanted to make sure that our meeting space meets the needs of the groups that use it."
