FEMA wants more to pay for program
New maps would require more homeowners to purchase insurance
SIKESTON -- When things don't make sense -- like FEMA's new floodplain maps -- it sometimes helps to follow the money.
Sikeston city officials, like those of other area municipality and county governments, have expressed serious concerns about the Federal Emergency Management Agency's new floodplain maps.
"I don't think it's a big secret across the country, based on research I've done, that FEMA is expanding flood zones in areas that historically have not flooded and will not flood even in a catastrophic situation," said Doug Friend, Sikeston's city manager.
This expansion is clearly intended "to have additional people pay premiums," Friend reasoned.
