Naylor comeback falls short

SPRINGFIELD -- The Naylor Lady Eagles softball team scored six runs in the final two innings but it wasn't enough to top a quick start by Silex with St. Alphonsus.

Naylor lost 7-6 in the Class 1 state championship game Saturday at the Killian Softball Complex in Springfield.

Darby Pruett went 4 for 4 to lead Naylor at the plate. Charity McCoy had two hits and two RBIs as well.

Silex began the game scoring two runs in each of the first three innings giving the Lady Eagles a big hill to climb to start the title game.

Silex, who had 10 hits, added their seventh run in the top of the sixth inning.

Naylor stormed back with four runs in the bottom half of the sixth when Pruett began the inning with a single. Erika Engelman then doubled to push Pruett across the plate. McCoy immediately singled in Engelman, Shayna Tharp scored McCoy on a groundout and Taylor Day singled in Andrea Sullivan for their four run inning.

The Lady Eagles plated two more runs in a last-ditch effort to pull out a come from behind victory.

With two outs, Engelman advanced to third and then scored on an outfield error following a single from McCoy. Sullivan then singled in McCoy to make it a one run game.

A groundout, though, ended Naylor's chance at a comeback.
