POPLAR BLUFF -- George Allen Russell, 88, formerly of Sikeston, died Dec. 16, 2012, at the Oakdale Care Center in Poplar Bluff.

Born Oct. 18, 1924, in Lamar, Ark., to the late Delmar Burton and Floy Altha Pearson Russell, he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, working as a radio and radar operator and serving at Pearl Harbor and in the Pacific Islands. He had owned and operated grocery stores in Bloomfield and Dexter and later was employed by Malone and Hyde. He was a charter member of the VFW Lodge No. 10373 in Jefferson, Texas, and of the North Acres General Baptist Church in Sikeston.

On Nov. 27, 1988, in Morley, he married Evelyn Whitmore who survives of the home.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Georgia "Gail" Kennedy of Goodyear, Ariz., and Jill Elaine Styles of Poplar Bluff; two brothers, Fred Russell of Ripley, W.Va. and Kenneth Russell of Boise, Idaho; three sisters, Ressa Shelton of Lebanon, Mary Ellen Mills of Sikeston and Margaret Mallett of Smithton, Ill.; and five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.

Graveside services with the Rev. Steve Tippen officiating will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Sikeston. Full military honors will be provided by the U.S. Navy Military Funeral Honor Guard.
