SIKESTON -- Engineers still have a few details to work out before submitting a plan to get more of Sikeston out of the floodplain.

City Manager Doug Friend advised the Sikeston City Council during the regular monthly meeting Monday that portions of the city in the floodplain on new maps are "already significantly reduced just by them getting some new data."

John Chittenden of Waters Engineering in Sikeston is working with engineers from Amec, the firm used by the Federal Emergency Management Agency for FEMA's flood map modernization project, to develop recommendations for stormwater improvements to take even more of Sikeston out of the floodplain.

"There's still some debate about the models," Friend said of delays on getting those recommendations.
