Jack Yount

SIKESTON -- John Henry "Jack" Yount Jr., 97, died at 9:20 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2013, at Mercy Hospital in St. Louis.

Born July 13, 1915, in Cairo, Ill., to the late Dr. John Henry and Minnie Jane Marshall Yount Sr., he was a landowner and farmer in New Madrid, Scott and Stoddard counties in Southeast Missouri. He attended the Western Military Academy in Alton, Ill., for three years and graduated from Doldan High School in St. Louis.

At age 16, he enrolled in Washington University in St. Louis, and graduated with a degree in English literature. He then attended the University of Missouri in Columbia where he received a degree in agriculture and was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He moved back to Sikeston in the late 1930s and began farming.

He had been a part owner and board member of the McMullin Gin Co. at Grant City for 60 years. He was active in the Sikeston community and helped establish the Sikeston Community Concerts Association and had served on the Sikeston Park Board for many years.

He was a member of the Sikeston Elks Lodge and for 60 years was a member of the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis. He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Sikeston where he had previously served as a member of the church board of stewards.

On June 24, 1940, in Jackson, he married Lilly Elizabeth Heyde who preceded him in death Feb. 6, 2002.

He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Nicholas Marshall Potashnick, Oct. 27, 2000.

He is survived by: two daughters, Jane Ella Yount Potashnick and Lilly Heyde Yount II of Sikeston; two grandchildren and their spouses, John Douglas and Virginia Grace Potashnick of St. Louis and Heyde Elizabeth and Todd Rendleman of Bell City; and one great-granddaughter, Ella Heyde Rendleman of Bell City.

Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Friday, March 1, at the First United Methodist Church in Sikeston. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 2, in the church sanctuary. The Rev. Geoff Posegate, pastor, will officiate.

Entombment will follow in the Sikeston City Mausoleum.

The Nunnelee Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
