SIKESTON -- A Sikeston volunteer service organization has created a new series of public meetings to bring the community closer and make it stronger.
The Sikeston Rotary Club will present its first in a series of "hot topic" public meetings at 7 p.m. March 18 at the Clinton Building in Sikeston. The topic, "Keeping Our Children Safe," is centered around school safety, which was spawned following the Sandy Hook school shooting, according to Sikeston Rotary Club President Jami Geske.
"That tragedy hurt all of us, and it also made us wonder if something like that could happen here and what we can do to prevent it," Geske said. "The result of our brainstorming is this meeting which will actually be a panel of speakers."
The panel will consist of Sikeston Public Safety Director Drew Juden, Sikeston R-6 Superintendent Tom Williams and Sikeston R-6 School Safety Coordinator Scott Ezell. They will present the implementation of their plans to help keep young people safe, Geske said.
Williams said he and Ezell will present information regarding the emergency procedures within the district's buildings.
"Anytime that the school can inform the public as to what we are doing within the buildings, I feel that it is a good idea to share with the public," Williams said about the opportunity to speak at the upcoming meeting.
