NEW MADRID -- Backed by a complete game effort from Michaela Townsend, the New Madrid County Central softball team opened the season with an 13-3 win over the Risco Lady Tigers.
"It was kind of cool and the field was a little slippery, but we ran the bases and hit the ball well," Lady Eagles' head coach Steve Rogers said. "(Townsend) threw well. We had a few defensive miscues, but that's to be expected.
"We hadn't been out much because of the weather, but it's good to get that first win under our belt."
After two quiet innings NMCC broke things open in the third frame with five runs, but following a quiet start Risco rallied for two runs in the fourth to close within three runs at 5-2.
Once again pulling away, NMCC added a run in the bottom of the fourth and another four in the fifth on their way to the 13-3 final.
Earning the win, Townsend gave up three hits and no walks while striking out six. All three of the Lady Tigers' runs were unearned.
Townsend was 3 for 4 with a double and a run scored at the plate.
Next up, the Lady Eagles (1-0) will host the Bloomfield Lady Wildcats today at 4 p.m.
