Library's expansion needs your support

Saturday, March 23, 2013

The Sikeston Public Library is in the middle of an exciting and much-needed mission to raise funds for expansion.

And it's impossible to argue the expansion is not needed.

With a goal of nearly $500,000, Library supporters are asking for your help in improving and expanding the community room which serves as the hub of many Library activities.

For example, back in the 1990s, the summer reading program served around 200 kids in this area. Last year the summer reading program attracted nearly 2,500 kids in the same space.

Obviously, something has to give.

Another example. In 2011-12, almost 9,000 kids - up to teenagers - took part in 250 different programs at the Library.

It's easy to see the necessity for the expansion based simply on the explosion in participation.

Public libraries are an extremely important part in the fabric of a community. And in Sikeston, we have long been blessed with dedicated staffers and volunteers who constantly upgrade and update the services and technology of the Library.

The fundraising effort under way here will help to bring the Library into a more modern era with added space for the entire community.

And believe me, when someone thinks about moving to our community, the Sikeston Public Library is part of that decision process for parents.

I urge all residents to consider a tax-deductible donation to the Library to make this dream a reality.

Even if you are not a regular users of the library services, look beyond your own interests and realize the importance of this facility in Sikeston.

For more information on the expansion plans or how to donate, you can contact the library at 471-4140 or visit their website at www.sikeston.lib.mo.us/Vision2013.

Today's investment will pay dividends long into the future.

That much is a guarantee.
