Late night fire, arrest

Tuesday, April 9, 2013

Charges are expected to be filed today against a 29-year-old man who started a fire at 11 p.m. Monday at an apartment on Matthews Street in Sikeston. According to Capt. Jim McMillen, public information officer with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, the man was said to have turned over a bed in the home and then set the apartment on fire. The victim, a 27-year-old Sikeston woman, tried to stop her boyfriend from setting the fire, but he pushed her down. During the altercation, a blanket caught fire. The woman was being held by her boyfriend but broke free and attempted to take the burning blanket out of the home but was pushed by the suspect. The blanket fell inside the home, and she fell out of the door as the apartment became engulfed in flames. Sikeston DPS responded and fought the fire but the apartment sustained heavy damage. The man left the scene and was later located by DPS and arrested. The woman had non-life threatening injuries to her arm from the altercation. McMillen said the man could face charges of first degree arson, first degree domestic assault and felonious restraint. His name is being withheld pending the filing of formal charges from the Scott County Prosecutor's Office.
