Brazen robbery is wake-up call for all

Sunday, April 14, 2013

The brazen armed robbery at the American Legion bingo night marks a new low in criminal activity in Sikeston.

But it also illustrates the ongoing need in our community for adequate Public Safety personnel and the urgent cry for the citizens of Sikeston to wake up and realize these crimes could happen to anyone at any time.

An armed robbery - apparently well planned - within a block of the Public Safety headquarters should sound an alarm bell for the entire community.

For those who ignore the criminal element in our community, perhaps this singular event will wake you from your apathy.

The reality is that if an armed robbery, or any type of potentially violent crime, can occur at the American Legion hall, then it can occur in your home, your business or anywhere else.

We are no longer shocked with armed robberies at convenience stores or other likely targets, but the American Legion hall during a bingo night?

Without any hype, I believe this is a watershed moment for our community.

The military veterans who proudly call the American Legion hall their home away from home deserve better.

These thugs must feel the full measure of the law and I have no doubt they will.

Don't you find some irony in this event occurring during a national debate on gun control. Want to bet the weapons brandished by these thugs were obtained illegally, most likely as stolen property.

The Sikeston Public Safety Department is second to none in this region. They are well-trained and well-equipped.

And this episode illustrates just why we invest the amount of resources in our safety within Sikeston.

These cowardly punks who victimize the elderly and women are a cancer on our community. And those who ignore their actions are equally as responsible.

Where are the voices of contempt throughout all neighborhoods of Sikeston who will stand and say "Enough!"?

You weed out the bad guys to protect the good guys.

I have full faith and confidence that this crime will be solved. And then hopefully the courts will send a clear and distinct message that Sikeston is off bounds for this criminal element.
