NEW MADRID -- In what could easily be the prelude to a SEMO Conference Tournament matchup this weekend, the Notre Dame Bulldogs visited New Madrid County Central on Monday.

Racking up 14 hits, the Bulldogs took an early two-run lead on the Eagles before running away in the later innings to a 12-0 final.

"The score doesn't indicate how good of a game it really was," NMCC head coach Joseph McClarty said. "They found some holes and we couldn't find any. We had runners on early and their pitcher (Chase Urhahn) was struggling throwing strikes, but a testament to him. He made pitches when he needed to and they made the outs when they had to get them."

It didn't take long for Notre Dame to seize control of the game as Chase Simmons hit a bases-clearing double in the top of the first with two runners on.

With the Bulldogs back up in the second frame, Josh Haggerty legged out a two-out infield single to plate the first run of what turned into a four-run rally. A single from Justin Landewee scored another run before Notre Dame stole home and scored on the a passed to round out the rally and take a 6-0 lead.

"We're built around our team speed and that's hustling," Bulldogs' head coach Jeff Graviett said about Haggerty's infield single. "I feel like all weekend we couldn't get the big hit in our tournament to get things done.

"Today it started in the first inning with Chase Simmons getting that two-run double and getting us on the board. So the guys stepped up and swung the bats well."

The Bulldogs went on to add runs in both the fourth and fifth innings before capping a 14-hit night with four runs in the seventh.

On the other side of the field, NMCC had it's opportunities, but couldn't get the big hit. They stranded a total of 10 base runners in the contest, including a bases loaded situation in the second inning. NMCC (9-7) appeared ready to capitalize on a rough start by Urhahn as he walked a pair of runners in the first and gave up another three passes in the second inning.

After escaping those two frames unscathed, however, Urhahn breezed through the third frame and went on to provide the Bulldogs with five shutout innings.

"We had runners on in every inning but the third," McClarty said. "That's what we talked about at the end of the game. We had him on the ropes and let him off by only seeing about six pitches that third inning."

Earning the win, Urhahn allowed two hits and six walks while striking out four. Griffin Siebert came in the game in relief and pitched two scoreless innings to close things out. Siebert gave up two hits and a walk while fanning three.

Graviett was pleased to see Urhahn buckle down after a rocky start, allowing the Bulldogs to keep their rotation fresh for the upcoming week.

"I went out there and told him that we really needed him to step up and give us five today," Graviett said. "We have Sikeston (today) and the conference tournament this weekend so we didn't want to get too far into our pitching staff.

"He did a good job of getting us through five and giving us an opportunity the rest of the week."

Notre Dame (18-3) was led by a 2 for 4 effort from Landewee that included a double as they outhit the Eagles 14-4. Siebert added another two hits to the cause while Urhahn, Simmons and Cambron Womack contributed a double each.

For NMCC, leadoff hitter Dylan Milisits had a pair of hits with JaShawn McDaniel drew walks in all three of his trips to the plate.
