Have you thanked your mother today?
Sunday, May 12, 2013
Every day should be Mother's Day! But we set aside just one day a year to pause and honor the foundation of our society - moms.
Society is so very familiar with the term single mother - so much so that we casually throw that label around virtually daily.
But consider the struggle of those single moms who take on the dual role of parenting - both as breadwinner and role model.
Their job is tough by any measure.
But it's the moms in this nation who provide the structure and care that nurtures tomorrow's generation.
Granted, there's an equally important role for the fathers. But this is not their day.
It's Mother's Day.
Though I don't want to throw a damper on this special day, there are hundreds of kids in this area being raised by a grandmother. Just when they thought those "motherly" duties were behind them, these very special women have taken on the responsibility of raising yet another generation.
Their contribution should also be noted.
Think just for a moment of the greatly expanded role that mothers have taken over the years. The snapshot of the mother of the 1950s compared to today is unrecognizable.
Today's mother often works to provide additional stability while continuing the traditional duties that have always been part of motherhood.
How do they find the time?
On behalf of a grateful generation of well-raised youngsters, I want to thank the moms - mine specifically - for providing the foundation that drives us to improve and follow on the examples set down for us.
One day is not enough.
But since it's all we have, thanks Mom!
