BENTON -- Time is running out to drop off tires at the Scott County Highway Department. Or to pick a few up.
"Tires are coming in pretty good up here but next Saturday, June 29, is the roundup when they will pick them up," Dennis Ziegenhorn, county commissioner, said during the regular County Commission meeting Tuesday.
Tires without rims for disposal will be accepted between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday until June 27 at the Highway Department's complex located at 497 Charleston St. in Benton.
"They are sure welcome to bring them up here -- tractor tires, any old tire their backyard that is going to cause mosquitoes -- they can get rid of them," Ziegenhorn said. "Tires are hard to get rid of, we realize, which is why we are doing this."
But, he added, not everybody interested in the tire roundup has been looking to get rid of old tires.
"A school has already asked us if they can have three or four," Ziegenhorn said. "So it's an opportunity if someone wants a tractor tire for a sandbox or something like that to come and get one, as well."
