Sikeston Junior Legion thumps Kelly 16-0 to open doubleheader
SIKESTON -- Highlighted by a monster 10-run rally in the first inning Wednesday, Sikeston Junior Legion Auxiliary Unit 114 took down visiting Kelly 16-0 in three innings in the opening game of a doubleheader.
"We came out and swung the bats real well today," Sikeston head coach Jacob May said. "Everybody contributed one through nine and our defense played really well."
Sikeston came just three batters shy of batting around the order twice in the first inning with their first five hitters all reaching before coming around to score. By the end of the frame Unit 114 had collected five hits and seven walks on their way to a commanding 10-0 lead.
In their only other trip to the plate Sikeston delivered on another six runs on the bottom of the second frame thanks in part to an Audi Hay single that plated two. Drew Pikey and Sam Cox and Colton Hampton all contributed singles in the frame as well with each driving home a run in the process.
Kelly threatened to break up the shutout in the top of the third by loading the bases for the first time in the contest. Before any damage could be done, whoever, Sikeston pitcher Blake Wolferding recorded the final out and the game was called.
Picking up the win, Wolferding went all three innings where he allowed four hits and two walks while striking out two.
"Blake actually threw a Junior Babe Ruth game last night and we weren't sure how much we were going to get out of him tonight," May said. "But he gave us three strong innings. I was real proud how we played."
Leading an 11-hit effort by Unit 114 was Audi Hay, who reached in all three plate appearances. Hay collected two hits, including a double, and a walk while scoring three times.
Pikey, Luke Williams and Gage Silman also contributed two hits to Sikeston's cause as well with Pikey also drawing a walk and scoring three times.
Colton and Nathan Hampton each singled.
After a short break Sikeston came back out and completed the sweep with a 17-2 decision in three innings.
Silman earned the win by going all three innings on the mound. He allowed four hits and a walk while fanning seven.
At the plate Logan Hampton was 3 for 3 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored. Cox scored three runs, drove in another three and legged out an inside-the-park home run.
Now at 13-3 on the season, Sikeston will host Dowell, Ill., on Sunday in a doubleheader with the first game starting at 2 p.m.
