CHARLESTON -- By approving a lease of the old county landfill in March, the Mississippi County Commission has resolved most of DNR's issues.
County Clerk Junior DeLay reviewed with commissioners during their regular weekly meeting Thursday a letter from Rick Pretz, supervisor of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources' Solid Waste Unit at its Southeast Regional Office, regarding the landfill closed in the mid 1980s.
In the letter, Pretz informed the Commission that on May 23 he "conducted an inspection and compliance visit of the closed Mississippi County Sanitary Landfill."
DeLay noted it has been a few years since DNR's last inspection.
On March 14, commissioners approved leasing the old county landfill's 80 acres to Greg Lacey of Scott City, who owns a farm east of the landfill, for 10 years with an option for another 10.
