Keep watch for new projects in Sikeston
Sunday, September 1, 2013
School is back in session, the days are getting shorter and Labor Day weekend has once again rolled around.
Though the calendar says otherwise, this weekend marks the unofficial start of fall. All too soon the weather will begin to change, vegetable gardens will be abandoned, football will replace baseball and we'll say goodbye to another summer.
You can tell it's September when the major retail stores roll out their Christmas season merchandise.
It was not always that way.
Halloween and Thanksgiving are mere blips on the retail radar because Christmas is the time when Americans find money they didn't know they had and spend it like it's burning a hole in their wallets.
It's far too early to bemoan the commercialization of Christmas. I'll wait a month or so before I get on that rant.
But honestly, if you're thinking about Christmas now you're better organized than I will ever be.
Given the economy and the uncertainty about our future, I'm cautious about the upcoming holiday season.
We talk a great deal about the "new normal" in these turbulent times. Diminished spending for Christmas may well be a sign of this new normal.
Only time will tell.
As we enter this new season, Sikeston residents need to pay close attention to three separate projects that are on our near horizon.
Though it's too early to detail, the city of Sikeston, the Board of Municipal Utilities and the Sikeston school system are all in discussions on three projects that will bring massive and long-term benefits to our community.
I'd love nothing more than to be the first to outline these pipeline projects but, honestly, it's a tad early to be tooting our horn.
But rest assured, when these three projects are unveiled, it will bring an air of excitement and progress that has long eluded our community.
Combined with the progress currently under way, these three opportunities should mark the beginning of a new era of growth in Sikeston.
I hope this is enough to pique your interest.
Stay tuned. You ain't seen nothing yet!
