CAPE GIRARDEAU -- For the first time in nine years the Sikeston Bulldogs soccer team defeated Notre Dame on their home field.
A 2-1 win during the Notre Dame Soccerfest Friday put the Bulldogs into the championship game of the tournament Saturday against Perryville. This was Sikeston's first win against Notre Dame on their field since 2004.
"Our defense definitely stepped up," Sikeston head coach Doyle Noe said. "They were very organized and limited Notre Dame's chances to score."
Sikeston (4-1) got their first goal from Audi Hay 20 minutes into the contest. Freshman Sam Cox put Sikeston ahead 2-0 just 10 minutes after the second half began.
Notre Dame tried mounting a comeback punching in their lone goal with less than four minutes left but Sikeston held on.
Sikeston will play Perryville Saturday at 5 p.m. for the championship of the Soccerfest tournament.
