After losing three of their last four, the Sikeston Bulldogs football team will enter the Class 4, District 1 tournament as the fourth seed as area teams try to keep their seasons alive during the first round of district play starting Thursday.

Sikeston (6-3) will host North County (6-3) at SPS Stadium Thursday at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs finished the regular season with a 35.98 district point total which was slightly better than North County's 35.73.

The current district tournament format was adopted before the 2012 season. It allows teams that finished in consecutive order to appeal their standing if they defeated the team ahead of them during the regular season. All but the teams involved vote on the appeal and at least four votes are needed to confirm the move.

The district standing point system consists of four different categories -- win-loss record, which class your opponent comes from, strength of schedule and point-margin.

In Class 3, District 1, the New Madrid County Central Eagles, who finished 3-6 with 24.74 points, utilized the appeal option to hop Dexter (2-7, 25.39) and take the fifth seed since they defeated the Bearcats earlier this season.

NMCC will travel to Fredericktown (4-5, 30.73) in the first round. Dexter will play at Potosi (5-4, 36.57). NMCC lost to Fredericktown once this season 20-6.

The Charleston Bluejays will host the Scott City Rams after Scott City appealed for the sixth seed over East Prairie.

The Bluejays (5-4, 38.38) are the Class 2, District 2 third seed behind top seed Caruthersville (7-1, 47.69) and Malden (7-2, 41.78). East Prairie (1-8, 19.59) is the district's seventh seed and will go on the road to Malden.

In Class 1, District 1, the Chaffee Red Devils are the district's two seed and will host Hayti (2-6, 28.86). Chaffee, who were derailed of a perfect regular season after a 43-28 loss to Charleston last week, are behind undefeated Valle Catholic (9-0, 57.37) in the standings.

Fourth-seeded Portageville (5-3, 43.07) will host St. Vincent (5-4, 40.93) in the first round.
