Official's visit will highlight local Legion
Sunday, November 3, 2013
The Sikeston American Legion Post 114 today will host a breakfast for National Commander Dan Dellinger, who heads the 2.4 million strong veterans' organization.
The Legion is the largest veterans/patriotic organization in the United States and, on behalf of the community, we welcome Commander Dellinger to our small corner of the world.
The visit by this distinguished guest gives us an opportunity to thank the local Legion Post for their tireless commitment to our community and for honoring the service and sacrifice of our veterans.
The Legion here has long been known for sponsoring the annual American Legion Cotton Carnival which recently marked the 69th year of celebration here.
But the Legion - and their Auxiliary - are much more than this annual fall event.
Long known for charitable giving, the local Legion Post also provides major funding for the Legion baseball program each year and is the leading sponsor of youth attending Boys State.
Not only does the Legion provide turkeys for the Thanksgiving Community Dinner but they also provide financial support for the Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, the Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau and the Veterans Park in Sikeston.
The Legion also was a $25,000 donor to the funding for the YMCA.
And members have long participated in Veterans Day and Memorial Day activities.
Not to be outdone, the Legion Auxiliary each year provides college scholarships to Sikeston High School graduates and provides financial support for the Veterans Cemetery, Home and Park.
Like the men, the Auxiliary sponsors young women to Girls State and they host a community luncheon for both Veterans Day and Memorial Day.
The Auxiliary recently hosted a series of events that raised $10,000 to the Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield.
The list could go on and on.
Put simply, the community is blessed with an active Legion and Auxiliary.
We hope the Commander's visit gives the local Post an opportunity to highlight the accomplishments they do on our behalf.
