SIKESTON -- The bigger retailers may get much of the attention on Black Friday, but it's the smaller, local merchants who garner attention the day after -- on Small Business Saturday.

Several Sikeston-area merchants are taking part in Saturday's event.

"Last year was the first year I participated in Small Business Saturday, and it was huge success, thanks to all of my customers who understood the importance of shopping locally during the holidays," said Jeannie Williams, owner of Purse'N'ality in Downtown Sikeston. "This year there are fewer shopping days between Thanksgiving and Christmas so I sincerely appreciate any and all attention focused on this special event."

Williams said she's placed a logo on her store door that says: "Shop small and save big. Small Business Saturday. Support our local small businesses this holiday season."

Purse'N'ality is having a one-day only sale to celebrate Small Business Saturday and will offer various specials ranging from 20 percent up to 50 percent off select items.

Brad Jones, Missouri state director of the National Federation of Independent Business, said shoppers can make a big difference in their local communities by supporting Small Business Saturday.

"If you want to make a difference this holiday season, shop local and shop small," Jones said. NFIB/Missouri is the state's leading small-business association.
