SIKESTON -- Power was restored in Sikeston's only electrical outage during last night's winter storm almost as soon as BMU got word it was down, according to officials.
At 3:30 a.m. today, the Sikeston Department of Public Safety responded to a report from the New Madrid County Sheriff's Department that a power transformer was on fire on County Line Road on the south side of the city.
Upon arriving, DPS officers found a high power line down and blocked the area off from traffic while officers determined whose line it was and contacted the appropriate power company.
Jeff Winders, operations manager for the Sikeston Board of Municipal Utilities, said it was not actually a line fire.
"One of the phase connections shorted out and burned up," said Winders. "It failed and we had to turn two circuits off to make the repairs. It was no big deal, really."
Power was restored by BMU line workers within about 15 minutes of them arriving on the scene, Winders said.
According to DPS officials, about 30-40 homes were without power for about 90 minutes.
Winders said as far as he knows, that is the only power outage in the city during this storm so far.
"Nobody's reported any more," he said. "It was a pretty uneventful night."
