ORAN -- From 1982-92, the Scott County Central Braves won the Oran Invitational Tournament a record 11-straight times.

They're now past the halfway point of reaching that milestone again.

The Braves own 21 championships in the tournament's 58-year history and added their sixth-straight title Saturday with an 88-76 comeback win over the host Oran Eagles.

"It was good for us to come out and win. I think it helped us come together as a team facing some adversity," Scott County Central head coach Frank Staple said. "We were able to pull it out."

The championship round was originally scheduled to end Dec. 6 but was moved around three different times due to winter weather.

"They're a good team, well coached and play hard," Oran head coach Joe Shoemaker said about the Braves. "I think a lot of the little things hurt us tonight and those we can correct. It was a good game for us as far as playing somebody better. It shows us little things that we have to work on."

Though 12 points separated them at the end, there were 10 ties and 10 lead changes throughout. Top-seeded Oran's biggest lead was nine points late in the first quarter.

Oran (5-1) held a 1-point lead entering the fourth quarter, but Scott Central sophomore Jeffery Porter took it upon himself to put the Braves (5-1) out in front for good with drives to the basket, often converting on tough shots. Porter, who finished with 22 points on 8 of 14 shooting from the floor and six assists, was reminiscent of another Porter who tortured Oran in three previous tournament meetings from 2008-10.

"That's what he's got to do for us this year," Staple said about Jeffery Porter, who is the younger brother of Otto Porter Jr. who is currently playing for the Washington Wizards. "We're going to put the ball in his hands a lot and let him create. He's got that type of ability. When we needed some points and stops, he got them on both ends of the floor."

Porter scored 12 points in the fourth quarter including six of their initial 10 in the first 1:25 of the period to put the Braves ahead 67-58.

"I was just trying to get everyone involved," Porter said about the fourth quarter. "I was trying to hit the open guys, get layups and play defense."

"We didn't have the best matchup on him and he took advantage of it," Shoemaker said about Porter. "We were trying to take some stuff away from LaRandis (Banks) and Jeffery made us pay."

Banks finished with 20 points and three steals in just his second game of the season. Javonta Daniel scored 13 on 6 of 6 shooting while Kendall Blissett added 10 points and six rebounds.

"At the end of the day we're happy with the win and happy we were able to get out of here alive," said Staple.

A quick start by the Eagles gave them a good chance at winning their first tournament championship since 1972 after outscoring the Braves 24-17 at the end of the first quarter. Oran's shooting depth led to the early advantage.

"One of the things we knew coming in that we had to do was stay on their shooters," Staple said. "They've got four or five kids that can drive and shoot the ball. We didn't do a good job of containing them and kind of got lost a few times."

Though SCC, seeded third, scored the first nine points of the second quarter and hurt the Eagles in the rebounding category for the majority of it, a combination of five different players scored for Oran as they clung to a 38-34 halftime lead.

"Rebounding and turnovers hurt us tonight," Shoemaker said. "There were a few times we had some bad shots, but the biggest thing was rebounding and turnovers. They're going to do that to people. That's a good basketball team."

Oran senior Seth Ressel commanded Oran's balanced attack in the first half. He finished with seven assists, six rebounds and 13 points on the night.

"We've got some offensive ability and the kids played very unselfish," said Shoemaker. "Seth Ressel had a lot to do with that. He makes our team go and he put the ball where it needed to be. I thought he did an excellent job of that tonight."

Seven points from Oran's Jacob Priggel kept the Eagles out in front, 49-42, with 4:07 left in the third quarter. But the Braves outscored Oran 15-9 in the last four minutes of the frame to slice Oran's lead to 58-57 entering fourth. Banks and Porter each scored six of the 15 in that stretch.

"It's big," Porter said about the win. "We were down and came back. We all started working together."

Hunter Schlosser had a game-high 25 points on 10 of 19 shooting and 10 rebounds. Priggel finished with 20.

"They're a good team, well coached and play hard," said Shoemaker. "I think a lot of the little things hurt us tonight and those we can correct.

"It was a good game for us as far as playing somebody better. It shows us little things that we have to work on."
