SIKESTON -- Finding out why some places in Sikeston have sidewalks while other places don't just takes a stroll down memory lane.
"In 1985, the city passed an ordinance to require sidewalks in all newly developed subdivisions," said Jay Lancaster, director of Public Work for the city. "Prior to 1985, it wasn't mandatory to put in sidewalks. Some developers chose to install or require sidewalks while others did not. That would explain why there are some residential areas that have sidewalks and others do not. Since 1985, new subdivisions, like Plantation Acres and South Ridge Estates behind Lowes, do have sidewalks."
