COLUMBIA -- Dexter's Trevor Waldner began the state wrestling meet as the top seed in his weight class.

He's continuing to make that seed hold true.

After two days of competition, the senior is in position to win the 138-pound, Class 2 state championship following two wins on Friday at Mizzou Arena in Columbia.

Waldner (39-3), who won his first match Thursday, advanced to the championship final after defeating Berkeley's John Williams by a 3-2 decision. He advanced to the semifinals after a 7-2 decision over Taylor Airrington from Odessa.

The senior, who finished fourth in the 132-pound division last year, will take on Olen Brattin from Pleasant Hill for the state championship on Saturday.

The Sikeston Bulldogs wrestling team started Friday with three chances to come home with a medal but that changed as the day went on in Class 3.

Freshman Josh Stinnett, who won his first round match Thursday, went on to lose two straight matches in the 195-pound weight class.

His first loss was to Kearney's Brandon Adams by a 3-2 decision which knocked him to the consolation bracket. He then lost to Camdenton's Kegan Ray by a 4-2 decision to end his season with a 32-13 record.

Both Garrett Middleton (113) and Clay Porter (170) fell to the consolation bracket after Thursday and each lost their first match of the day on Friday.

Middleton, a sophomore, finished the season with a 36-12 record while senior Porter ended with an 18-9.

Also for Dexter, Michael Hurst (182) and Storm Massey (132), who both hung on in the consolation bracket on Thursday, each lost their consolation second round match.

In Class 1, both Rhiley Smith (126) and Garrett Manley (132) lost their second consolation match Friday. Smith and Manley each lost their opening round match but kept their medal chances alive by winning their first consolation match on Thursday.
