SIKESTON -- Think of it as a soft and cuddly way of saying thanks to those who give up most comforts to keep us safe.

"We have a lot of veterans we think should be recognized from the past as well as the ones that are serving now," said Glenda Dacus of Sikeston, president of the Bootheel Quilter Guild.

Dacus said the Guild's members voted early last year to show their appreciation as quilting guilds in other areas have done by making a special quilt and presenting it to a veteran each year.

"We hope to give it away around Veterans Day," Dacus said of this year's patriotic quilt. "No two will be exactly alike. Every one of them will be different as each member makes the block of their choice, just as long as it's red, white and blue. This particular one had 20 blocks: four across and five down, plus the border."
