Dexter's Chase Young making mark as a freshman
MARTIN, Tenn. -- Even after missing his senior year of high school to injury, former Dexter standout Chase Young hasn't skipped a beat in his transition to the next level.
Not only is Young starting as a freshman at the University of Tennessee-Martin, he's one of the Skyhawks' leading contributors so far this season.
Having played in 12 of the Skyhawks' 14 games so far, Young is the team's third leading hitter, with a .289 batting-average. The left-hander has started 11 of those contests and has put together a .449 on-base percentage, which stands as second best on the team.
Serving primarily as a left fielder and the team's leadoff hitter, while also pinch hitting, he leads the team in hits (11) and walks (11). Young also has the Skyhawks' fourth best slugging percentage at .289.
So far Young has produced three multi-hit games, including a career-high three hit effort in his Ohio Valley Conference debut against Jacksonville State. He's drawn at least two walks on several occasion, with a season high four free passes against Southern Illinois on Feb. 25.
In the field young has a .947 fielding percentage with only one error.
Unfortunately for the Skyhawks, it's been a rough start to the season. They stand at just 1-13 on the year and 0-3 in Ohio Valley Conference play.
They'll try to make it up this weekend when they host Murray State for a three-game series that started Friday and runs through Sunday.
