Mothers deserve our thanks every day

Happy Mother's Day. We set aside one day a year - which is clearly not enough - to honor and celebrate the moms in this country.
And given the current state of society, I can think of no more appropriate person to honor and revere than the mothers who often form the foundation of our society.
But what once passed as the traditional mother is simply no longer the case.
A survey released just last week showed that single moms are increasingly becoming the norm.
And regardless how effective and hard-working a single mother may be, the absence of a male role model is the leading cause of what I believe is a downward drift in society.
I can only imagine the challenges that must face a single mom raising a child or two on her own.
To say that would be a difficult task is to grossly understate the case.
Among some segments of society, the rate of single parent households - which are overwhelmingly female - tops 78 percent.
Roll that number around in your mind for just a moment.
Nearly 8 in 10 new babies come into houses headed by a single female.
And we wonder why we face such a daunting task in society?
We should salute all moms not just on this one day but each and every day.
Being a bread winner and a moral compass for children is perhaps the single most challenging job in the world.
Yet each day literally millions of women do just that.
I suspect we all realize that the burden on that single mom is not sustainable. Despite some monumental efforts and tireless commitment, the challenges facing moms today is unparalleled in our history.
Though I disagree that it takes a village to raise a child, I know moms need our support and prayers and help in countless ways.
Like many of you, I was blessed with a strong, supportive mother who to this very day provides me with a keen insight of experience and love.
I wish that on everyone.
So take a moment today to recognize your mother and all of those brave souls who provide the glue that holds our society together.
And in that moment of recognition, also realize the thankless task they perform each and every day.
Thanks, Mom.
