Sikeston golf team sending two to state
ST LOUIS -- Of the three they sent to the Class 3 sectional gold meet, the Sikeston Bulldogs golf team saw two advance to state after play at Quail Creek Golf Club in St. Louis.
Both juniors Gabe Wheeler and Blake Below made the cut with Wheeler leading the way by shooting an 82 that left him 10 over par and tied for seventh overall in the tournament. Below shot an 86 on the day, 14 over-par, which was good for a tie for 17th overall.
Sikeston's lone senior on the tip, Austin Bowman, saw a heartbreaking end to his career as he finished just one shot under the cut. His round of 87 left him tied for 20th overall and 15 over par with a round of 86 representing the cutoff.
"We're glad we got two through," Bulldog golf coach Brent Taylor said. "We really wanted our third one through and he was in position to get through and just didn't finish. But to get two out of three into the state tournament is a positive deal. Both of them are juniors coming back too, so that's another positive for the team for next year.
Taylor added, "It was tough conditions. It was a golf course they'd only seen one time. It was a very position oriented golf course. You couldn't just hit it anywhere, you had to be real precise with where you played it. With the wind and the conditions of the day, it just made it play tough."
Other locals having strong days include Dexter sophomore Ethan Stevens, who shot five over par 77 to finish tied for fourth place on the day. Fellow Bearcat Drake Mitchell missed the cut by just two shots with a 16 over par.
As a team Dexter finished in fifth place by shooting a combined 360 while Notre Dame took the top spot with a total of 313.
