BLOOMFIELD -- A Dexter man accused of a violent attack on his girlfriend will soon have a preliminary hearing to determine whether his case will continue to move forward.

Herbert Alan Saffell, 39, of Dexter, was arrested in early March for allegedly attacking his live-in girlfriend. He was charged with the Class A felony of domestic assault in the first degree.

Saffell was scheduled to appear for a case review Thursday. At the hearing, a preliminary hearing was scheduled for Thursday, June 26 to determine whether the case should advance to Division 1 felony court.

Saffell's girlfriend was discovered "in a pool of blood" with what authorities called "life-threatening injuries."

Originally given no bond in the case, Judge Joe Satterfield recently issued a new ruling that states, "After considering all relevant factors, it was determined that his (Saffell's) bond should be set at $250,000 cash-only with no surety or 10-percent allowed.

Satterfield noted that Saffell is a "danger to the victim and the community," making it necessary to require a bond of a sufficient amount to ensure he appears in court and complies with special conditions.
