FULTON -- The Charleston Fighting Squirrels finished up their first day of the William Woods Alumni Coaches Showcase in Fulton with a win and a tie in the round robin style tournament.
Their first game of the evening, against Fulton Legion, was still knotted up 1-1 after nine innings, resulting in the unusual tie due to the two-hour time limit.
Layton Tenkhoff got a triple in the bottom of the first inning before being driven in by a Blake Wolferding single to put the Squirrels on top.
Fulton came back to tie with a run in the fourth and the two teams played shutout ball until the game was called.
Starter Brad Potts ended up with a no decision despite a complete game effort. He allowed four hits and a walk in nine innings pitched while striking out eight.
Besides Tenkhoff and Wolferding's offense in the first inning, Jason Mattison had the only other hit, a single.
Charleston came back and closed out the night with a 13-1 win over New Bloomfield in their second contest in six innings via the mercy rule.
Rallies of three and two runs in the first two innings gave the Squirrels an early 5-1 advantage with a five-run outburst in the fourth pushing them ahead 10-1.
Three runs in the six put the run-rule in effect to close their night out early.
Starter Jarrett Sandlin picked up the win, going five innings where he allowed a run on two hits and no walks while fanning seven.
At the plate Charleston combined for nine hits with Matt Ulrich's 3 for 4 night leading the way. He collected two doubles and drove in three runs.
Austin Aldridge and Wolferding had two hits each with Ty Householder and Chance Maness contributing a single. Both Wolferding and Maness also drove in two runs.
Now at 16-3-1 on the season, the Squirrels will wrap up the tournament today when they play Blair Oaks at 10 a.m. and New Bloomfield again directly after.
