SIKESTON - A woman is in custody after reportedly shooting her husband Monday afternoon.
Around 5 p.m. Monday, the Sikeston Department of Public Safety received a call for a subject shot on Daniel Street. Officers responded to a residence in the 400 block of Daniel Street and located a male subject with a gunshot wound to his torso.
"The man said his wife shot him at their home located at 414 Daniel, just minutes before our arrival. He reported that his wife was still in the home next door," said Capt. Jim McMillen, DPS public information officer.
Officers surrounded 414 Daniel and attempted to make contact with the wife, identified as Yulonda L. Mitchell.
"We soon learned that the couple had three children in the home and the mother was reluctant to exit," McMillen said in a news release.
A family member was able to make phone contact and relay instructions to the woman how to exit the home unarmed. The suspect surrendered at the front door of the home without incident and the children were unharmed, McMillen said.
The husband was transported to a local hospital for treatment of the gunshot wound. According to McMillen, the victim was last reported in serious but stable condition.
Investigators obtained a search warrant for the home and processed the scene.
Mitchell, 38, is charged through the Scott County Court with first degree domestic assault, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm. Bond is set at $50,000 cash or surety and as of press time she remains in custody.
