SIKESTON -- Two men who ran away from DPS officers Friday were caught and arrested, according to the Sikeston Department of Public Safety.

The first, Martin Daniel, 29, Neelyville, Mo., was arrested for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

DPS officials had received information indicating Martin, a felon, was unlawfully carrying a firearm and there were concerns he intended to commit a retaliatory shooting, according to Sikeston DPS Capt. Bill Mygatt.

DPS officers reported seeing a suspect they believed to be Martin at about 3:43 p.m. Friday in the area of West Malone Avenue and Branum Avenue near West Side Liquor, made contact and asked for identification.

The suspect did not produce an ID but provided a name later determined to be false, according to Mygatt.

"So they told him they were going to pat him down for weapons and got in position -- and he ran," Mygatt said. "During the initial pursuit they observed what appeared to be a black pistol fall from his waistband. He stopped and picked it up, put it back where it fell from and continued running."
