Sikeston wrestling team sweeps NMCC and Kennett
SIKESTON -- In their final tune up before this weekend's Tiger Classic, the Sikeston Bulldogs wrestling team picked up a pair of home wins Tuesday in a tri-meet with Kennett and New Madrid County Central.
The Bulldogs cruised by the Indians 75-6 before closing out the night in convincing fashion, 52-15, against the Eagles.
"We could have done better, but New Madrid is very tough and their program is getting a lot better," Sikeston head coach Chris Lowe said. "We still have things to work on to get our consistency up a little bit."
The Bulldogs took advantage of the Indians' growing pains as they fight through the early part of their first year as a program. Sikeston won seven matches via pin with Kennett's Kaleb Tribble picking up a win in the 160-pound division to break up the shutout.
NMCC kept their matchup with the Bulldogs close early, winning three of four matches in the middle of their meeting. Sikeston closed it out by winning five straight, including forfiets, however, to pick up 30 points and sweep their home meet.
"You just have to take your hat off to them," Lowe said. "New Madrid really wrestled hard. We wrestled okay. We have a lot to work on this early in the year."
Luis Valdez (132), Luke Blanton (152), Joshua Stinnett (182) and Mitchell Garner (285) all won both their matches with pins.
Next up, Sikeston will take part in the Tiger Classic starting Friday in Cape Girardeau.
