Thursday snow wreaks havoc

POPLAR BLUFF -- Snowy conditions wreaked havoc on drivers with several vehicle accidents happening Thursday in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Sikeston Board of Municipal Utilities, which serves as an official observer for the National Weather Service, less than an inch -- about .25 -- of snowfall was recorded in Sikeston Thursday. By afternoon, much of the snow had melted but not before hindering driving conditions for motorists.

The first accident reported by the Missouri State Highway Patrol occurred at 6:24 a.m. when a Dexter woman was injured in a two-vehicle accident, half a mile west of Fisk. Chelsie R. Teague, 18, of Fisk was traveling west on Highway 60 when she attempted to pass and struck the westbound vehicle driven by Rebecca L. Schaefer, 44, of Dexter. Schaefer was transported by ambulance to Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.

At 6:25 a.m., a one-vehicle accident one mile south of Dexter resulted in minor injuries for a Jackson woman. Courtanie L. Vaughn, 23, was traveling northbound on Highway 25 when she lost control of her vehicle and struck a road sign and culvert. She was taken by ambulance to Southeast Healthcare Center of Stoddard County in Dexter.
