Sikeston girls basketball team pressures Perryville in 61-22 win
SIKESTON -- Back to back games from the Sikeston Lady Bulldogs have yielded lopsided results. Not just by the margin of victory, but the colossal amount of turnovers they create too.
Sikeston has made the most of 70 combined turnovers from its last two opponents with the latest being a 61-22 victory over Perryville on Tuesday at the Sikeston Field House.
Sikeston forced Perryville into 35 turnovers -- 22 of them steals -- five days after coaxing Notre Dame into 35 as well.
"I think from start to finish this is the best defensive performance we've had all year," Sikeston head coach Matt Schonhoff said.
This is Sikeston's second win over Perryville -- one of its district opponents -- this season. The first was a 57-25 victory during the first round of the Kelso Supply Holiday Classic.
11 players scored at least one field goal with Tyeshia Mitchell leading the way with 11. Erica Peet and Larysa McClellon added 10 points and seven rebounds each. Peet also had five steals while Mitchell added four.
Ahnie Hoff led Perryville (6-8) with 11 points.
"My girls did not play well tonight," Perryville head coach Vicki Lohmann said. "I thought we had a better game plan and we went out there and panicked. We shouldn't have been panicking because we've already faced them once and the second time facing a team you should look better. We did not look better tonight."
Sikeston shot just under 50 percent (25 of 61) from the field but made up for it by limiting Perryville to 22 total shot attempts.
"I felt like we didn't shoot the ball enough," Lohmann said. "The last time we played them we shot 27 times. We weren't successful tonight."
Sikeston (9-4) began the game with a 10-0 run which mostly came from 11 Perryville turnovers. Hoff made Perryville's first field goal with 3:13 left in the first quarter but Sikeston finished the frame with a 6-2 run giving them a 16-5 advantage.
Another 11 turnovers from Perryville in the second quarter limited their offensive chances even more. They shot just twice from the field, one being a 3-pointer from Kylie Bilek, and were 3 of 6 from the free throw line.
"We held (Kylie) Bilek to three points, who is their best player," Schnohoff said. "We took her totally out which allowed (Perryville) to struggle."
Though Sikeston shot 5 of 16 in the second, they still managed to extend their lead to 26-11 by halftime. Perryville had 22 turnovers to Sikeston's six by that time.
"We knew they were quick," Lohmann said. "There was some pretty rough play tonight and we knew they were going to double-team Kylie and were going to be physical against her. Once they did that we don't have another guard that's strong enough or confident enough to take the ball down the floor."
Sikeston opened the third quarter in dominating fashion. They scored 24 unanswered points for a 50-11 lead. Perryville's first basket came with 1:07 left in the frame.
"I thought our focus and intensity was just excellent," Schonhoff said about the third quarter run. "The girls were reading passes and put them in bad spots on the press. They reacted well."
Perryville was held to seven shot attempts in the first quarter, two in the second and six in the third. In the first three quarters Perryville was 4 of 15 from the field.
"We hit our layups after we stole the basketball," said Schonhoff. "We went to the free throw line. We were diving on loose balls and even in the fourth quarter we were doing that. It was one of our best defensive performances of the year."
One area Lohmann was hoping to have an edge was inside. Hoff and Emma Nelson combined for 34 points and 29 rebounds during Perryville's 66-42 win over Valle Catholic Monday but was held to 12 and 10 combined against Sikeston.
"My post players usually play strong but tonight they were nonexistent," Lohmann said. "They didn't want to go against the boards and didn't want to battle. The quickness of Sikeston pushing the ball up the floor wears you out on this big court."
Sikeston out-rebounded Perryville 31-17 and were the aggressors in the paint.
"We have four really good post players," Schonhoff said. "Ariana (Beard) has kicked it on the last couple games, Erica and Tyeshia have done well the entire year and Larysa has done well. When they concentrate and have fun great things happen for us."
Sikeston has won five of its last six games including its last three by an average margin of 31 points.
"We just take it one game at a time," said Schonhoff. "We put it on our board that we wanted to go 3-0 against district competition so far and go 9-4. We accomplished both of those tonight. The girls were ready."
Sikeston continues on Thursday with a road game against Poplar Bluff with junior varsity starting at 6 p.m.
"We've had our chances against Bluff the past couple of years but going down there is always tough," said Schonhoff. "They always play well at home and this is a big test for us to go on the road."
