SIKESTON -- A half dozen bids resulted in a price not as low as hoped but as good as can be expected for the city's new airport terminal.

The Sikeston City Council awarded the contract to build the new terminal for Sikeston's municipal airport to the low bidder, Zoellner Construction of Perryville, during their regular monthly briefing session held Tuesday due to the Monday holiday.

"We did receive a good number of bids," said Jay Lancaster, public works director for Sikeston. "I was very pleased to get that many."

Zoellner's low bid of $850,658.29 was "not quite down to the number" city staff had hoped to get, Lancaster said, but did come in below the engineer's estimate of $886,000.

Most of the project will be paid for from "funds that have to be spent on airport-related projects," Lancaster said, such as federal Airport Trust Fund allocations disbursed by the Missouri Department of Transportation's Aviation Division.

With the funding available now, which includes allocations from more years that usually allowed by MoDOT and may include unspent allocations from other Missouri cities, "this is our one shot at replacing" the airport terminal building, Mayor Steven Burch said.

Councilman Bob Depro said Zoellner Construction "came in under bid and ahead of schedule" on the Sikeston Library's most recent construction project.
