SIKESTON -- The Sikeston City Council rejected a flood plain map revision and will contract for another study.
Jay Lancaster, public works director, presented during the Council's regular monthly briefing session Monday the results of a public hearing on revised flood plain mapping.
The maps were originally produced by Amec, a company contracted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency for FEMA's flood map modernization project.
Amec was contracted for a more detailed study after which the city hired Allgeier, Martin and Associates of Rolla for a second opinion on the detailed flood elevation study by Amec.
The latest map revision was presented to the public July 8 at the Clinton Building to gather public input before the Council decision to submit them to FEMA for approval.
"The public that has spoken seeks for the Council to authorize more be done. They do not want to see this map revision submitted and would like to see, rather, a new study by conducted," Lancaster said.
