SIKESTON -- Having provided satisfactory service, the Sikeston Area Humane Society was awarded a year-long contract to operate the city's animal shelter.
The Sikeston City Council approved the one-year contract during their regular monthly briefing session Monday.
"We just got done with a six-month trial contract with them," said Jay Lancaster, public works director for the city. "The Humane Society has done a very good job of addressing the issues."
By working diligently with shelters and adoption agencies in other areas, the Humane Society has transformed the shelter population "from an incredibly overcrowded situation" to, as of a recent visit, "four animals," Lancaster said. "We are extremely pleased with the efforts they've made."
