Many years ago in St. Louis a Christian was doing some business with a lawyer. And this Christian said to the lawyer: "You know, I have wanted for many years to ask you a question, but I have been afraid to ask." The lawyer was a kind man, and he said, "I can't imagine what question you would be afraid to ask me, but whatever it is, please go ahead and ask it." So the Christian said to the lawyer, "I want to ask you this question, are you saved? Are you a Christian?" And the lawyer said, "I have read something in the Bible that says, "No drunkard shall inherit the kingdom of God," and you know my problem, you know what a slave I am to drink.". ...

Are you a Christian?" And the lawyer said, "I have read something in the Bible that says, "No drunkard shall inherit the kingdom of God," and you know my problem, you know what a slave I am to drink."

Then this Christian said, "I didn't ask you that. I asked if you were a Christian. If you have been saved?" He said, "Well, I don't even think I know how to be saved." And the Christian took the Bible and sat down with this lawyer and showed him how God loved him and how the Lord Jesus Christ would come into his life and how the Lord Jesus Christ would give him power over drink or anything else that had a grip on his life, and then he said, "Let's pray. And I want you to open your heart to receive Christ as your Savior and Lord."

Then those two men got down on their knees to pray in the lawyer's office, and this is the prayer that lawyer prayed: "Jesus, you know what a slave I have been to drink. This morning your servant has shown me the way to God. Oh, God, break this power in my life and save me!" That lawyer later on got up and gave this testimony: he said, "In that moment God broke the power of drink in my life instantly, and Jesus saved me." Who was that lawyer? Dr. C. I. Scofield, the editor of the Scofield Bible. The same gospel that broke the power of liquor and saved him can also save the smallest child. Think of the simplicity and power of the gospel that saves a little child and yet also saves an educated and alcoholic lawyer.

ABC's of salvation are so simple. Admit that you are a sinner, "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Believe that Jesus died on the cross for your sins and rose again to give you eternal life. Confess Jesus as Lord. That means to turn from your sin and trust Him and give Him control of your life. Won't you, right now, if you have never done so pray to receive Christ as your personal savior and Lord?

A simple prayer that you might pray is: "Dear Lord, I know that I'm a sinner. I know that you love me and that you died to save me. I repent of my sin, I ask you to forgive me. Come into my heart and make me the person you would have me to be. I don't look for a sign, I don't ask for a feeling, I stand on your word. You promised to save me if I would trust you. I do trust you. Thank you for saving me and help me to never be ashamed of you."

If you prayed that prayer I hope that you will find a Bible believing, Bible preaching, New Testament church and go to the pastor of that church and tell him you have been saved and would like to be baptized and become a member of that church. We would love to have you here at First Baptist Church but there are other fine churches. Seek the one that God has for you. God bless you and remember that God loves you and so do we First Baptist Church.
