SIKESTON -- A Sikeston man wanted for shooting another man was taken into custody following a vehicle stop in Sikeston.

Orlando "TJ" Sheron, 20, of Sikeston, who is charged with first degree assault and armed criminal action for a July 30 shooting, was arrested on a warrant Friday in Sikeston, according to Capt. Jim McMillen, public information officer for Sikeston Department of Public Safety. Sheron allegedly had a shootout with 23-year-old Dewayne "Lil Wayne" Harris Jr. on John R. Boulevard.

Sheron faces an additional charge of unlawful use of a weapon. Harris, also of Sikeston, faces first degree assault and armed criminal action, and he remains at-large.

Since July 30 Sheron has been hiding from police to avoid arrest, McMillen said. On Friday Sikeston DPS received information Sheron was leaving his mother's home on Cambridge Street in a vehicle. DPS officers responded to the area, located the vehicle in question and stopped it on Main Street near Greer, he said. Officers approached the driver and then recognized the back passenger as Sheron.

Sheron attempted to flee out of the back of the car, but officers were able to take him into custody, McMillen said.. He was arrested on his felony warrants and also for a misdemeanor warrant through the city for failure to appear on a marijuana possession offense.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Brandon Morrell Johnson, 28, of Sikeston. Johnson was arrested for hindering prosecution in reference to Sheron's arrest warrant, McMillen said.

Additionally, during the stop the department canine "Levi" alerted on the vehicle for the presence of narcotics. Officers located a small amount of marijuana in plain view on the lap of Johnson, a small set of digital scales and a small amount of what appeared to be cocaine on Johnson's seat, McMillen said. It was also alleged that Johnson swallowed a small baggie of marijuana during the initial stop.

Johnson was later charged with the felonies of hindering prosecution and possession of a controlled substance and the misdemeanors of tampering with physical evidence, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.

Johnson was given a $50,000 cash only bond and is currently in custody at the Scott County Jail.

Police are still searching for Harris, McMillen said. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact Sikeston DPS at 573-471-4711 or the crime stoppers hotline at 573-471-1500. Tips can remain anonymous and you can be eligible for a cash reward.
