Cairo, Ill., man arrested for distributing drugs at workplace in Charleston
CHARLESTON -- An Illinois man is facing felony drug distribution charges following a narcotics investigation in Mississippi County.
Jeremy Riggs, 32, of Cairo, Ill., is charged with felony distribution of a controlled substance. He also faces one count of misdemeanor unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.
According to Mississippi County Sheriff Keith Moore, the investigation began last week when Deputy Marc Tragesser received information that various narcotics were being distributed from a Charleston restaurant.
Based on that information, Moore placed the business under surveillance and deputies soon noticed several indicators of illegal narcotics activity, the sheriff said.
The break in the investigation came late Thursday when Deputy Mark Higgins observed restaurant employee Jeremy Riggs exit the building to conduct a suspicious transaction in the restaurant parking lot.
At that time, Tragesser and Higgins confronted the parties to the transaction and determined that Riggs had sold narcotics to the other party.
During the investigation, deputies obtained consent to search Riggs' vehicle, and a subsequent search of the vehicle turned up additional narcotics and drug paraphernalia.
At that time, Riggs was placed under arrest and transported to the Mississippi County Detention Center.
As of press time, Riggs remains in the Mississippi County Detention Center with bond set at $50,000.
