Public Works is not collecting leaves from front curbs this year as neither of the city's two leaf sucking trucks are working. While the service is already missed by some, concrete repairs such as this one on Fairfield between North Main and Columbine would have been delayed at least until the after the leaf collection program concluded, according to Jay Lancaster, DPW director. The only other Public Works employee not working on street repairs Wednesday was tasked with monitoring use of the the city's compost site, according to Brian Dial, street superintendent. SIKESTON -- The Sikeston Department of Public Works may not be carting off your leaves this year but they are hard at work elsewhere.

"We are in the middle of the period of time when we normally would be collecting leaves," said Jay Lancaster, public works director for the city of Sikeston.

But those six workers -- three per leaf collection rig -- are this year free to tackle other Public Works projects, Lancaster said.

"We've been doing street repairs all over the place," he said. "We've had the time -- and we've had the weather. So we've been getting to a lot of street work."
