Gas prices keep dropping; $1.99 in Marston
Gas prices in Portageville haven't gone below $1.99 a gallon, but they had fallen to $2.05.
On Monday, the Pilot Truck Stop in Marston displayed $1.99 on their sign.
New Portageville Jaycee Club forms

Store Clerk to Muscle Bound, Foster overcomes disease and doubt
One area youth is showing strength, courage, determination and faith to many today after a diagnosis in 2010 changed his entire life. Zach Foster, then 16, had just started working at Baker's Grocery Store in Portageville, when he started noticing differences in the way he felt and functioned throughout the day. He found himself constantly thirsty and consistently dealing with headaches. All day long his body dragged and finally, he realized that something had to be seriously wrong, because the symptoms didn't stop. On August 16, 2010, a trip to the doctor diagnosed the issue, with blood glucose levels at 737 (normal being less than 140) he was found to have the disease of diabetes.
"When I found out I had diabetes, I honestly didn't know how I was going to live my life from then on. I was terrified by the fact that I was diagnosed with a disease that could potentially kill me if I didn't take care of myself. I would have to give myself injections and I doubted that I could do it," said Foster

Young man's tragic accident affects several in area towns
TALLAPOOSA - The body of a driver, killed in an accident Saturday morning, was discovered Sunday.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol's report, Byron M. Windham-Sharp, 21, of Gideon was apparently driving eastbound on County Road 248, one mile west of Tallapoosa, at 2 a.m. Saturday when his truck ran off the right side of the roadway. The vehicle struck a telephone box, then went off a bridge, overturning in a ditch.
Sikeston homicide victim identified
SIKESTON -- The victim of the Sunday evening murder in Sikeston has been identified. Christopher West, 31, of Sikeston was found shot to death Sunday evening inside a vehicle facing northbound in the middle of the road on U.S. Highway 61 North near College Street in Sikeston, according to Capt. James McMillen, public information officer for Sikeston Department of Public Safety.
At 5:40 p.m. Sunday, Sikeston DPS was contacted about a shooting at U.S. 61 North near College Street in Sikeston.
SRG Global provides support to local organizations
With many things happening in Portageville, SRG Global Portageville has taken some steps to show their support to both the Portageville Bulldogs and the community.
During the Fall sports seasons, the plant has displayed a colorful look at the front entrance of their facility, as well as when you exit I-55, you can look to the right across from McDonalds and see more support.
Rone officially working for 149th District
Jefferson City - Last Wednesday, January 7, Don Rone was sworn in to represent the 149th District in the 98th Session of the Missouri State Legislature. His wife Myra and many other family members traveled to Jefferson
City to attend the ceremony at the State Capitol.
After the first day of session was adjourned, he and his wife, Myra, joined other representatives and senators from across the state for the grand march to kick off the 2015 Inaugural Ball.

Southeast announces Fall 2014 Dean's List
CAPE GIRARDEAU-- Southeast Missouri State University has named 2,478 students to its Dean's List for academic achievement during the fall 2014 semester. Students named to the list earned at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and completed at least 12 degree credit hours during the fall session.

Area municipal and school board races underway
As filings end on Tuesday for the Municipal and School Board elections, three races have developed- the Portageville mayor's seat and two seats on the Portageville School Board.
Incumbent Mayor Denis McCrate is being challenged by Ward Two Alderman Floyd Simmons. In Ward One, Jessie Jamies and Lynn Doering will campaign for the alderman's seat. Doering held that position several years ago.
Other filings include Joe DeLisle for reelection as Ward Two alderman, and Michele Crawford for City Collector.
Four area residents arrested on felony charges
NEW MADRID - Four New Madrid County residents face felony assault charges stemming from a 2014 beating of a Sikeston man.
Russell S. Wescoat of New Madrid is charged with two counts of felony assault charges in the second degree.
Sarah M. Wescoat and William Lee Wescoat Jr. of Matthews and Thomas W. Lawfield III of New Madrid are each charged with one count of felony assault in the second degree. Charges were filed Jan. 9 by Assistant Attorney General G. Brad Crowell.

The Portageville Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony as part of the Grand Opening celebration of Portageville Parts Inc.'s new building. The grand opening was held last Thursday in conjunction with their annual Hot Dog Day. This year marks their 53rd Anniversary. Portageville Parts Inc. is a Carquest automotive dealer, and is the only home-owned automotive parts store in Portageville. They also cater to hardware, tractor, and farm supplies.
Southeast Missouri State inducts newest Hall of Fame class
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Former Southeast Missouri State men's basketball player Derek Winans stood on a stage in the middle of the Show Me Center on Friday night, a place he'd been accustomed to for most of his life.
This time it was to be inducted into the Southeast Athletics Hall of Fame along with three other individuals, a team and a family.

PSC rate hike hearing draws crowd
A near capacity crowd turned out Monday night at the Dexter Elks Lodge for the Public Service Commission (PSC) hearing on the latest proposed rate hike from southeast Missouri's primary electric power supplier, Ameren Missouri.
Ameren's defense- The first order of business was a brief overview of the rate case by Warren Wood, Ameren's Vice President of External Affairs & Communications.
Noranda, Ameren remain at odds over electric rates
NEW MADRID, Mo. -- A proposal by Ameren Missouri on the rates it wants to charge its largest customer, Noranda Aluminum, needs more work, Noranda officials say.
During a recent hearing before the Public Service Commission, Matt Michels, Ameren's senior manager of corporate analysis, reportedly proposed Noranda a lower wholesale rate based on market pricing, as an unregulated customer, in a five-year contract. At the end of the five-year term, Ameren then would have the ability to sell the energy Noranda was using on the open market.

Bond, young veterans visit Capitol lending support to SB287
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Former Missouri auditor, governor, and U.S. Senator Kit Bond was in the building today lending his support to Kansas City Republican Sen. Ryan Silvey's SB287.
The bill would allow veterans and their spouses and dependent children, as well as spouses and dependent children of deceased veterans, with incomes up to 138% of the federal poverty level, to be eligible for MO HealthNet benefits. The bill effectively expands Medicaid for veterans and their families.

NEW MADRID - The kickoff of the celebration marking the New Madrid County Court House's 100th birthday came complete with cake.

Search for missing New Madrid woman continues
NEW MADRID - The search for a missing New Madrid woman continues as law enforcement rules out the most recent lead in the 18-month-old case.
A car spotted in the depths of the Mississippi River last fall is not Barbara Stoffer's, said New Madrid Police Chief Joey Higgerson. Stoffer, 83, was driving a 1997 green four-door Volvo 850 with Missouri license plate number 073RYW on Aug. 20, 2013, in the Parma area of New Madrid County, shortly before her disappearance.

County plans several activities to celebrate courthouse centennial
NEW MADRID - January, New Madrid County began a year-long celebration marking the centennial of its courthouse.
Carved above the building's doorways is 1915, the date construction began on the white limestone structure. Throughout 2015, a 10-member committee is planning activities to increase awareness in the history of the court house and the county.

Area State Troopers Promoted, Assigned
Captain George E. Ridens, commanding officer of Troop E, Poplar Bluff, is pleased to announce the promotion of Corporal C.D. Parrott to the rank of sergeant. Sergeant Parrott will remain in his current assignment as the Troop E public information and education officer, which serves 13 counties in Southeast Missouri.
Parrott joined the Patrol on October 20, 2002, as a member of the 80th Recruit Class. Upon graduating from the Patrol's Law Enforcement Academy in Jefferson City, he was assigned to Troop H, Zone 4, Mercer, Grundy, and Livingston counties.
New House Bill addresses 911 funding
Legislation has been introduced in the Missouri House of Representatives that would increase funding for 911 service districts across the state by taxing all communication devices used to call 911.
Administrators of local 911 services are hopeful the bill will be passed and signed by the governor by the end of the current legislative session.
Currently, 49 counties rely on surcharges on customer wired phone service (land lines) to fund 911 services.

The New Madrid County Commission met Monday, Feb. 1, for the annual budget hearing for the 2015. The meeting was held in the office of County Clerk and Budget Officer Clement Cravens. He presented the docket and records of this Commission, information and estimates for the year 2015 as required by County Budget Law (Sections 50.525 to 50.745, RSMo.)

There is no time like snow time
After being buried under almost a foot of snow, Southeast Missouri is slowly clearing the powder from the streets.
It appears Punxsutawney Phil was right. Forecasters predicted six to 12 inches of snow would blanket New Madrid County Sunday night, and they were just about on the money. Portageville awoke to about five inches on the ground Monday morning, and a steady and blowing snow increased that to about seven inches by mid-morning, accompanied by temperatures in the teens and low 20's. A wintry mix of sleet and snow began falling in the area around 10 p.m. Sunday night, turning to snow before midnight. Many residents began clearing sidewalks and drives by 8 a.m., only to have to repeat the process before Noon. The storm made for a picturesque view of the city streets, but left traveling conditions daunting, especially for vehicles not equipped with four-wheel drive.
Feeding city workers
The Living Stone Baptist Church fed city employees Tuesday morning while they took a quick break from ice and snow removal. This was just one way the church expressed their thankfulness for the great work they do for the community!
Academic All-State Award

Portageville city board hears updates on city drainage project
The Code Enforcement Officer and the city drainage project were some of the items of discussion during the regular session of the February Portageville City Council meeting, held at City Hall on Monday, Feb. 2.
Tammy Wyman was present to ask the Board of Aldermen about some new dog pen panels for the dog pound. They told her to go ahead and order some of these panels and get started a little at a time. A motion was made by Alderman Simmons and seconded by Alderman DeLisle.
On a cold winter's night
The Portageville Fire Department had to battle snow, ice and brutal temperatures last Friday night to try and quell a structure fi re at 809 Rear Foster Avenue. According to the fi re report, the structure was owned by Jessie Hages. While there were no injuries, the building was a complete loss. 10 fi refi ghters worked the blaze. One teacher resigns, business manager sought
One Portageville High School teacher will resign from her position after this school year. The board of directors approved the resignation of Tammy Jackson at the monthly meeting of the Portageville School District's Board of Directors meeting. The board met on Tuesday, Feb. 10.
Jackson is retiring. She has taught in the Portageville School District for 25 and one-half years. Currently, she teaches Advanced Computer Business Applications, Accounting 1 and 2, Business Technology and Business Law. Jackson has also sponsored the high school's Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) for 23 years.

Area history made through education
With February coming to a close, the month known as Black History Month also comes to an end. For years, the month has been the basis of movies, books, plays, and educational programs throughout the U.S.
During the July 1954 assembly of the Malden Board of Education, members ended segregation at Malden High School.
Sobriety Check planned for Troop E area
Captain George E. Ridens, commanding officer of Troop E, Poplar Bluff, Missouri, announces that sometime during the month of March, Troop E officers will conduct a sobriety checkpoint and a driving while intoxicated saturation enforcement operation. The sobriety checkpoint will be in Scott County and the saturation will be in Butler, Cape Girardeau, Scott, Stoddard, Dunklin, Pemiscot, and New Madrid counties. The operation will be conducted by the Missouri State Highway Patrol in cooperation with local law enforcement agencies.
The checkpoint is a static operation on a specific highway that is designed to check every driver to ensure they are sober. The driving while intoxicated saturation is a mobile operation in which troopers saturate a specific area in an effort to arrest intoxicated drivers.
3.1 quake hits near Lilbourn
A 3.1 magnitude earthquake was reported near Lilbourn on Saturday, according to reports from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). It happened around 5 p.m., and was centered four miles south-southwest of Lilbourn. While there were no reports of major damages or injuries, residents in the a 12-mile radius area did report their houses shook and pictures fell off the walls.
At his home on Saturday in Lilbourn, Scott Seal of the Portageville Missourian- News, described it as coming in like a wave that really shook things up, although he reported no damages at his residence. Seal said it was the strongest tremor he recalls having hit the area in quite some time.

Winter Storm Thor leaves area with a white snow blanket, up to 12 inches in places
While Thursday afternoon finally brought sunshine to the Bootheel, below-freezing temperatures prevented much of the overnight snow from melting, and a hard freeze Thursday night into Friday refroze slushy side streets that had yet to be cleared. Black ice was also reported. Winter Storm Thor broke the all time, two-day snow record in parts of Kentucky, with up to 20 inches.
Winter Storm Thor also made travel treacherous along parts of I-55 in southeast Missouri, on Wednesday night and through Thursday. Ronnie Adams, Jr., Emergency Management Director for the City of Portageville, said, "The fire department as called out to assist stranded motorist Wednesday evening. The Livingstone Baptist Church offered to open up their building as a warming center for the stranded motorists. Fortunately, there were only eight. We were expecting a whole lot more." The First Baptist Church was also on standby, if needed as a warming center, Adams said.

Portageville organization receives $3 million to provide child care
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Children and Families (ACF) has announced the award of an Early Head Start grant to Delta Area Economic Opportunity Corporation. This grant improves access to high quality early learning opportunities for infants and toddlers in low-income families.
"As the mother of young children, early learning is a big part of my personal life," said HHS Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell. "We're awarding $3 million annually to Delta Area Economic Opportunity Corporation to help ensure more children in Portageville will benefit from high-quality early childhood efforts. As a result, we expect that 160 additional children a year will be able to access Early Head Start. That's a lot of young lives changed, and a lot of impact delivered."
DED releases January 2015 Jobs Report
Jefferson City - According to seasonally adjusted data released today by the Missouri Department of Economic Development, the state's nonfarm payroll employment gained 14,300 jobs in the first month of 2015, following an increase of 4,400 in December 2014.
Missouri's unemployment rate edged up in January a tenth of a point to 5.5 percent. In comparison, the national unemployment rate for January was 5.7 percent, also up a tenth of a point from December.

New Madrid woman honored by Missouri Soybean Association
(JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.) - Missouri's soybean growers met in Jefferson City today to set policy resolutions, recognize those making special contributions to the state's soybean value chain, and to celebrate the bright future ahead as part of the Missouri Soybean Association's annual meeting.
"Soybeans are Missouri's top cash crop and soybean farmers are an important voice for Missouri agriculture, as well as for transportation, exports and economic development," said Tom Raffety, a southeast Missouri farmer and president of the Missouri Soybean Association. "The Missouri Soybean Association is the farmers' voice in Jefferson City, and our growers were well-represented this week, both in the Capitol and among their peers and industry partners."
Corps of Engineers invites public aboard largest diesel towboat
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Memphis District will offer the public two opportunities to tour the largest diesel towboat operating on the Mississippi River. The tours are offered to the public at no cost.
Agreement would exempt low income households from potential Ameren increase
ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Low income and low-usage customers in particular would benefit from an agreement filed today by Consumers Council of Missouri and other consumer groups in the Ameren Missouri rate case. The settlement would also lower Noranda Aluminum's electric rate in a way that protects other ratepayers.
If approved by the Public Service Commission, the agreement would for the first time exempt qualifying low-income residents from the Missouri Energy Efficiency Investment Act surcharge, saving each about $7 a month.
Cotton producers to meet in Kennett
The Cotton Producers of Missouri will hold their annual meeting on Saturday, March 21, at the Opera House on the square in Kennett, Mo. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m., and dinner begins at 6:30 p.m.
Bobby Skeen, from the National Cotton Board, and Kelly Smith, from Missouri Farm Bureau, will discuss water issues in Missouri that impact farmers. The annual Cotton Fashion Show that takes place during the meeting will have a Western theme this year.

Tower of Power comes down
The remains of a downed water tower has the resemblance of a UFO shot down from the sky. The Tower of Power, as young children have named it, was cut down much like a large tree in the forest, one leg at a time, last Tuesday. The tower was located behind the Lilbourn Water Department office on Second Street. According to Lilbourn Mayor Larry Hamilton, after it was discovered the tank had contaminating fungus and rusted on the inside, the board decided to take it down. There are no plans to erect another one in its place.

County wide sales tax proposed to voters
One of the main items that will be on the ballot next Tuesday, April 7, is a county-wide sales tax proposal.
It will be an opportunity for voters to decide on a much needed one-half cent sales tax. It will be used solely for the purpose of funding improvements to transportation infrastructure in New Madrid County.
A joint press release of the County Commissioners, Mark Baker, Don Day and Tom Bradley reads: "With over 600 miles of county roads to maintain, the current funding for the county Road and Bridge Department - primarily from property taxes and state distributions from the County Aid Road Trust Fund - is no longer sufficient to cover the escalating costs of adequately maintaining our road and bridge infrastructure."
Portageville School Board asks voters to approve bond issue
The Portageville School District Board of Education and administrators are asking the citizens of the Portageville School District to vote yes on the upcoming school bond issue. The current tax levy for the Portageville School District is $3.50. The district is asking the public to vote to maintain this tax levy.
The proposed bond issue would have a maximum pay off of 11 years. This extends the previous bond issue by 4 years.
New Madrid County Construction Projects
Route H in New Madrid County will be closed as Railroad crews repair the railroad crossing. This section of roadway is located between Railroad Street and Miller Drive.
Roadway Maintenance
Southbound Interstate 55 in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane as contractors crews perform guardrail repairs. This section of roadway is located between Route 80 and Route 162.

City has been charging Park Board for mowing
The Portageville Park Board is wondering why the City is charging them for mowing. New Park Board President Steve Bradford approached the City Council asking this question. "From what I have been told, the City has not charged for mowing in the past, until this year," he said. "We have a bill for $8,000 for mowing the parks."
Mayor Denis McCrate said that the City has been mowing the parks for several years. "The Park Board had been taking care of that until the man doing that died, then the City took on that task," he said.
Local bank conducts annual Easter Egg Hunt
The Easter Bunny made his way to Portageville last Tuesday afternoon. He was at Meatte Family Memorial Park assisting the First State Bank and Trust Company with their annual Easter Egg Hunt.
At the park, the Easter Bunny was letting parents take pictures of him with their little children.
Missouri Mentoring Partnership Visits the Capitol
The Missouri Mentoring Partnership from the New Madrid County Family Resource Center visited the building. Coordinator Tami Maly brought three remarkable young ladies to Jefferson City for the Speak Hard Youth Conference. This conference, hosted by Missouri Youth/Adult Alliance, is geared towards giving youth the opportunity to learn about underage drinking, substance abuse, and active prevention.

Simmons is new Portageville mayor; County-wide Half-cent sales tax for transportation passes
NEW MADRID - Voters gave the nod for a new county-wide sales tax proposal to fund road improvements.
In Tuesday's general election, more than 54 percent of voters said yes to a half-cent sales tax. The money generated will be used solely for the purpose of improving transportation infrastructure in the county.
There were 1,413 yes votes cast and 1,165 no votes, according to the unofficial results provided by County Clerk Clement Cravens. Tuesday's election also brought some new faces into city office and on area school boards.
Challenger Floyd Simmons unseated Mayor Denis McCrate by tallying 317 votes to McCrate's 229.
Ward 1 Alderman Jessie James was narrowly defeated by Lynn Doering, who received 107 votes to James' 105 votes.
Running without opposition were Michele Crawford, city collector, 461 votes; and Joseph DeLisle, Ward 2 alderman, 287 votes.
Voters in the Portageville School District overwhelmingly gave their approval to issue $1,800,000 in general obligation bonds for the purpose of constructing new school facilities as well as renovating current buildings along with furnishing and equipping the new and improved facilities. There were 473 yes votes with 125 no votes cast for the issue.
Pre-engineering firm hired for water drainage project
This is a follow up from last week's City Council story that mentioned the City had received monies from a class-action lawsuit, that was announced last December.
"The city had been involved in a longstanding class action law suit since 2012," said Portageville Mayor, Denis McCrate. "Some MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether) was found in one of the city wells, Number 10 Well, one that is not even in use. The amount level was not high enough to worry about, according to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR)," explained McCrate.
Saelem Sipes wins in essay contest
A Portageville middle school student along with many of her classmates entered the Missouri High School Activities Junior High Sportsmanship Essay Contest in the Fall 2014. Saelem Sipes was chosen as the Portageville Junior High winner and her essay was submitted to the District Competition. She also won the District Competition and fi nished 8th in the state of Missouri.

Memorial makes stop at New Madrid
NEW MADRID -- It is an 80 percent scale replica of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C., but Wiley Allred, commander of New Madrid County Memorial VFW Post 7183, believes it will have 100 percent of the impact.
When the Traveling Wall is on display May 7 through 10 in New Madrid's Scott Street Park, Allred, who served in Vietnam in 1968-69, said he will carefully look through the 58,000 inscribed names of those who lost their lives in Vietnam.
Woman is killed in crash
PORTAGEVILLE -- A woman was killed when the vehicle she was riding in struck a parked tractor-trailer rig.
At 6 p.m. Sunday on Interstate 55, three miles south of Portageville, a southbound vehicle driven by Jessica M. Richmond, 33, of Sikeston ran off the roadway. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol's report, the vehicle struck the rear of a parked tractor and trailer, driven by Edward J. Fournie, 60, of Freeburg, Ill.

Macie Hoggard and Landon DeLisle were chosen as the 2015 Prom Queen and King. Prom was held Saturday, April 11.
Largest donation made in history to Sikeston/Bootheel United Way
New Madrid, -- Two weeks ago, April 9th, an area company CEO and President was recognized for making the largest donation by an individual in the history of one Southeast Missouri organization.
During a brief presentation at Noranda's New Madrid facility, Layle Kip Smith, CEO and President of Noranda Aluminum was recognized for making a donation of $10,000 in support of the Sikeston/Bootheel Area United Way.

Missouri Mule exhibit in New Madrid
NEW MADRID -- Everyone has a mule story, says Duane Dailey, the photographer behind the exhibit, Missouri Mules and Men.
According to Dailey, when the show was unveiled at the McDougall Center Gallery at the University of Missouri's School of Journalism last fall, it drew people from across the region. Many wanted to retell a story told by their grandfather or other ancestor about mules.

Hall wins junior queen contest
Maisie Hall won Junior Miss Queen on Thursday, April 9. The pageant was held at the Charleston Dogwood Azalea Festival. She is the 14 year old daughter of Chris and Misty Hall of Portageville. She attends St. Eustachius School in Portageville.

Portageville High School cafeteria to be renovated
PORTAGEVILLE -- When it came time to prepare meals each school day for more than 800 students, Portageville Superintendent Michael Allred kept his fingers crossed.
Each day as the staff prepared meals not only for the Portageville School District students but those in Head Start and attending St. Eustachius Catholic School, he hoped the decades-old cooler where the food was stored was still working. The walk-in freezer, which was equally old, didn't freeze to the point it was a danger to staff as they went in to retrieve items.
New City leaders ready to work for a progressive Portageville
Upon taking their oaths of offices, the new Mayor and Ward One Alderwoman took their seats to begin a new fiscal year. Being sworn in as Mayor is Floyd Simmons and Lynn Doering as Ward 1 Alderwoman.
The new board approved liquor licenses for the following businesses. The new liquor license will take effect July 1. If a business has not applied for a renewal of liquor license, their current license will expire and the end of June. On July 1, you can then purchase a new license.
Steele woman awarded $20 million in wrongful-death lawsuit
STEELE, Mo. -- The widow of a Southeast Missouri businessman killed in a collision with a train in 2012 was awarded $20 million in court this week.
After deliberating for just over two hours, a jury returned a wrongful-death verdict Tuesday in favor of Sherry Spence against Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway. Spence is the wife of the late Scott Spence, a well-known businessman in the area who owned lumber mills in Steele and Portageville, Missouri.
Top two Mustang grads
The top two students of the North Pemiscot graduating Class of 2015 are Kristen Phillips and Anna Raymond. Commencement exercises will be held Saturday, May 16 in the Ross Gymnasium, beginning at 4 PM.

The beginning of a new adventure
There were 53 Seniors that made the Processional March at Vic Reaves Athletic Field last Thursday night, May 7th.

Britt, Priggel are top two PHS graduates
The Portageville graduating class of 2015 had Co-Validictorians, both with 4.0 grade point average. They were Kristin Britt and Derrick Priggel.

Replica of Vietnam Memorial has deep roots for many in area
NEW MADRID - Retired Army Col. Richard Sherman observed there couldn't be a more appropriate time for the public to view The Traveling Wall, a replica of the Vietnam Memorial. This year, Sherman pointed out, is the 50th anniversary of the start of the Vietnam War and the 40th anniversary of the end of the war.
The Traveling Wall, sponsored by New Madrid County Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 7183, was on display at the Scott Street Park in New Madrid.

New Madrid County Central High School recognized five valedictorians at its graduation ceremony held Tuesday, May 19. The following have distinguished themselves by maintaining a 4.0 GPA for all eight semesters: Monique Antoinette Fahy, Jessye Suzanne Griffin, Sarah Elizabeth Hupp, Drew Allen Palmer, and Emilee Lynn Palmer.

Parma woman killed during robbery
PARMA - A store clerk was shot to death during an apparent armed robbery.
According to the New Madrid County Sheriff Terry Stevens, Brenda Smith, 59, of rural Parma resident was shot and killed at approximately 5:30 a.m. Monday as she and another employee were opening the D and L One Stop for business.

Second mule book written
Missouri author Lonny Thiele has written his second mule book titled, "My Life With Harry--the Mule." The 145-page book chronicles eight years in the life of a young girl in Scott County as she and Harry help save the family farm in the 1930s. It is based on a true story. Thiele is the author of "That Son of a Gun Had Sense: Mule Stories from the Bootheel Area During the 1930s-1940s Era."

University of Missouri develops Irrigation App.
In April of this year, the University of Missouri released a new irrigation phone app for Missouri farmers. A photo of the main menu of the Crop Water Use App was featured on the last issue of SEMO Farmer. Dr. Gene Stevens at the Fisher Delta Center said the project has an interesting history. The story began in 2010 with MU research in Modimolle, South Africa. Howard G. Buffett funded irrigation research at the Fisher Delta Center at Portageville in exchange for doing the same type of work on his farm near Johannesburg.
Stevens and his wife, Leeta, lived on a cheetah reserve and worked during South African summers when it was winter in Missouri. He said it was a great experience and said, "we would go back there in a heartbeat".

Suspect in Parma murder in custody
Bernie, Dexter convenience store employees aid in eventual arrest
PARMA, Mo. -- Deion Martin will know in just a few weeks whether he will face the death penalty for the shooting death of a Parma woman during a robbery.
Martin, 21, who is charged in the shooting death of Brenda Smith on May 15, made his first court appearance Wednesday afternoon in Division II of New Madrid County Circuit Court. Standing quietly next to his attorney, Martin listened as Associate Judge Josh Underwood read each of the charges he faces.

Scherer hired as new city clerk
You may have seen her already, but Jenny Scherer has been hired as the new City Clerk for the City of Portageville. She has been on the job learning from former Clerk Paula Ezell. She resigned from that position for personal reasons and taking care of grandchildren. Ezell will be available to advise Scherer about the job.

Miss July Fourth Pageants To Be Held July 4th
Girls throughout the Missouri Bootheel will have an opportunity to register for the Mr. and Miss July Fourth FunFest Beauty Pageant.
Plans are to have the annual July Fourth FunFest Beauty pageants on Saturday, July 4th at the Portageville Elementary Gymnasium, pending approval from the school district.

The waiting lists for Ameren Gas, Ameren Electric, and Liberty Gas customers is even shorter, as these utilities have contributed funds specifically for their clients.
Council hears insurance proposal; Listens to details on new Jaycee event
One of the many items of discussion during the regular monthly City Council meeting held June 1 was a presentation from Bob Darst from Federated Insurance. The City is seeking proposals from different area insurance agencies for the City insurance. Ellington Insurance will be talking to the council possibly at the mid-month meeting.
On another topic, Police Chief Ronnie Adams approached the Council about new decals to go on the new police department's four-wheel truck. The decal will be placed on the tail gate to show support to the Portageville Bulldogs.

Portageville Community Day deemed successful
Even a 50 percent chance of rain on Saturday did not stop the Portageville Jaycees from having their first Portageville Community Day.
"It was a much better that what we had expected," said Les Vannasdall, one of the organizers of the event. "I believe we had between 30-34 vendors at the event."
Noranda Obtains Project Financing to Complete
New Madrid Rod Mill
Franklin, Ten. -- Noranda Aluminum Holding Corporation (NYSE: NOR) ("Noranda") announced on Tuesday that it has obtained $15 million of project-specific financing that will allow it to complete a state of-the-art redraw rod mill at its aluminum smelter in New Madrid.
The new rod mill will increase Noranda's production capacity by approximately 43 percent and will exemplify the latest cutting-edge technology in the North American marketplace.
Cyclists Ride the Fault Line
A Sunday morning drive down EE Highway is usually pretty quiet. That was not the case this Sunday when 300 bicyclists and their entourage pedaled their way to Kennett. Those taking part in the Ride the Fault Line bike tour began in New Madrid, with riders getting up early Sunday, heading to Kennett via Malden and Peach Orchard.
The seven day bike tour started and ended in New Madrid. Tour members travel through portions of four states and pedal approximately 60 miles per day. The bikers come from all over the United States, and a couple are from Germany and Ireland. Chances are the vast majority have never heard of Kennett, much less visited. Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Melissa Combs and a large team of volunteers are rolling out the red carpet in hopes that this will not be the last time the bike tour schedules a stop here.

Three are seriously injured in ATV crash
PORTAGEVILLE - A driver and two children were ejected from an ATV during a weekend accident.
Sarah E. Keene, 30, Brooklyn R. Linville, 6, and Carson J. Linville, 4, of Portageville were all seriously injured in an accident at 6:45 p.m. Saturday on Highway TT at County Road 417, four miles southeast of Portageville.
Rain, floods may hurt crop yields
Less than half of Missouri's farm acres predicted to grow soybeans this year have been planted, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported last week.
Planting progress in several areas of the state, most notably northeast and Southeast Missouri, is behind because of excessive rainfall and flooding in some areas.
Brewer makes donation
Ms. Betty Brewer who took it upon herself to raffle two of her crafts at Community Day and donate all of the proceeds to the Jaycees Wonderland Camp near Lake of Ozarks. The camp is for children with developmental challenges so that they may have a camp experience. She raised $158. In Portageville, you can shoot fireworks between July 2 and July 5 before 10 p.m.
Legislators scrap testing company
Missouri school officials are still waiting on end of the year assessments results, despite testing consortium Smarter Balanced's promise of a 10-day return.
The failure to provide scores for the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment in a timely manor is just another guffaw in a long string of issues over the new test, but likely the last as a funding ban by the Missouri legislature takes the consortium out of the equation.
