The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of New Madrid County will hold a kickoff meeting for the annual New Madrid County Relay for Life event on Thursday, January 28 at Portageville Community Building at 6:00 pm. Everyone is invited to the kickoff to learn about how to help the American Cancer Society save more lives from cancer.

The program will highlight how the county has benefited from funds raised and how Relay teams can do their part in the fight against cancer. Guests will have the opportunity to register a team and pick up supplies for the Relay For Life event, which will be held on May 14, 2016 at Matthews City Park.

The Relay For Life movement unites communities across the globe to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action to finish the fight once and for all. Relay For Life events are community gatherings where teams and individuals camp out at a school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Teams participate in fundraising in the months leading up to the event.

The Relay For Life movement is the world's largest fundraising event to fight every cancer in every community, with four million participants in 6,000 events worldwide in 2015.

New Madrid County Relay for Life is looking for volunteers to join their Event Leadership Team. The Event Leads are Jamie Higgerson, Bring the People Lead; and Maggie Bodi, Build the Fun Lead. They are still seeking a Lead for Fund the Mission. The amount of money raised last year was $47,516.

If you have one hour a month to dedicate to our monthly meetings and a passion to help us find a cure, love and encourage our survivors, and enjoy having fun we would love to have you!

"This is a great opportunity for those interested in forming a Team to get registered and pick up helpful materials to get this season started," said Relay for Life Community Manager, Kasie Jones-Holder.

Visit relayforlife.org or http://relayforlife.org/newmadridcom to learn more about the event, or contact Kasie Jones-Holder at 573-334-9352 or kasie.jonesholder@cancer.org.

Also, this Saturday, January 16, there will be an Event Leadership Team Workshop in Sikeston, MO. It will be held in the Clinton Building located at 501 Campanella Drive. It begins at 9 am through 12 Noon. Breakfast is included.
